AIRLINES FLIGHT 204
The Airline:
TANS Peru Airlines, founded in the 1960’s by the Air
Force to help serve remote jungle communities, became a commercial
airline in 1998. It currently has flights between Lima, Cusco and
Puerto Maldonado.
The Aircraft:
Along with the 737-100, the 737-200 was part of the
first generation production models of the world’s most successful jet
airliner family, Boeing's 737 twinjet. They were first ordered in 1965
and delivered in December of 1967. The 737-200 had its first flight on
August 8 1967 and remained in production until 1988, after 1114 had
been built.
The
launch customer of the 737-200 was
United Airlines.
Background and History of the Flight:
Flight 204 departed Lima with 92 passengers, 6 crew members, for a
total of 98 people on board. It was originally scheduled to stop
briefly in Pucallpa, before continuing onto Iquitos – a popular
tourist destination.
Service and Maintenance History of the Aircraft:
The
plane was built in 1983.
The Flight Crew:
No
information about the identity of the flight crew has been released.
The
Passengers and Crew:
Flight 204 listed 11 Americans, two Italians, an
Australian, a Spaniard and a Colombian on board. All of the other
passengers and crew members were Peruvian. Among the 16 foreigners on
the fligh, six Americans and two Italians had survived.
